How to Write for the Internet

People do not read the same way on the Internet as the do when reading from paper. On the Internet they tend to scan the page rather than reading whole sentences, thus it is crucial that you write in appropriate way.

Listed below are certain things that you should do in order to write effectively on the Internet:

• Ensure that you place important information at the top of the page
• Try to adopt the "Inverted Pyramid" format
• This means starting with the conclusion and then progressively include less important information as you move down the page
• Reduce your text - Try to reduce the amount of text as much as possible, avoid clutter and stick to simplicity.
• Use "chunking" - Try to chunk your paragraphs by keeping your lines short. Try to only use 100 words per paragraph and only talk about on subject in each paragraph.
• Use meaningful sub headings
• Try to use bullet points or numbered lists
• Highlight words in bold or with color
• Write for an international audience - You must write for an international audience so avoid using slang, local dialect and be precise with language.
• Never use a long word when a short one will do - If you can cut out a word then cut it out
• Never use the passive when you can use the active
• Try to not use a scientific word or foreign phrase when you can use an everyday words instead
• Try to wrote the way you actually speak
