How to Write Poetry
Poetry has been around for centuries and is still as popular as ever. The main reason why poetry is still immensely popular is the fact that it allows writers to express their thoughts and feelings in an intimate and intense way. It can be said that it is fairly difficult to set out an exact way to write poetry because eventually every writer comes up with their own unique way and develops their own techniques. However, listed below are a few pointers that may help you to write poetry:
Inspiration
All good poems come from inspiration. As the writer you need to think about why you are writing the poem? Is it to do with love, loss of someone or even something that happened to you that has left a lasting impression with you. When you think of the event or subject then it it is important to try and remember how you actually felt at each point along the journey and try to use words or phrases that will allow the reader to feel what you want them to feel.
Brainstorming
Before you start writing your poem it is a good idea to warm up and brainstorm for awhile. In order to do this there a number of techniques that you can use. Firstly, you could pick any word and then list everything that rhymes with that word. You could pick an any object for instance, a clock and then write down everything you notice about that object. It may also be a good idea to list adjectives such as happy and then write down all the words that man the same as that adjective. By making this list it will help you to describe things in your poems.
Constantly think about ideas and record them
It is important that you constantly carry a notepad or diary with you and record things that you see or any ideas that you come up with.
Do not need to rhyme
When writing your poem do not worry if it does not rhyme because it does not need to. It is far more important just to write what you want to say and what you feel.
Write your poem from different points of view
It may be a good idea to write your poem from several different points of view. This will enable you to capture different feelings and emotions.
Look in the mirror
Look in th mirror and write about the person looking back at you.
Go out in your neighborhood
Go into your neighborhood and look about for things to write about.
Rewrite your poem at least once
Remember to rewrite your poem at least once. You may even find that you rewrite it hundreds of times!
Feedback
Ensure that you attain feedback from various readers because their feedback will be invaluable. Although, the feedback may be negative as well as positive so you need to be prepared to take criticism and make changes to the poem according to this feedback.
Avoid telling a story
You must avoid telling a story in a poem. You are trying to use words and phrases that portray emotions, imagery an feelings within the reader.
