How to Write for Travel
Travel writing is becoming increasingly popular because it enables you to go traveling and write about subjects that magazines, newspapers or travel guides would find of interest. The advantage of this being that you can get paid some money for writing these useful articles.
In order for people to be interested in paying you to write about your travels, you must do a number of things when writing:
- Focus on what is unusual and different about the location
- Look for something that makes the place special
- Look for something that stood out to you and focus your writing on it. This may be a person that stood out from you or a colors on a building.
- Try to use short words and sentences instead of long words and paragraphs
- Try to talk about the positive aspects of your location and not the negative
- Do not use first person narrative because people are not really interested in what you think
- Do not state the obvious. Do not tell people what they will already know themselves
- Do not talk about ethnic or religious differences
- Do not use obscure language that some people may not understand
- Try to use a high standard of English using strong similes and metaphors
- Incorporate humor into your writing because you want to make the reader laugh with your wittiness
- Try and surprise the reader by doing an activity that is out of the ordinary and people may not know about
- Take quotes from people who went on activities or experienced something and ask them how the felt about it
- If you are writing for a magazine in particular then you should examine their previous travel reports and try to get a feel of their writing style
- Try to think like the reader. Try to ascertain what style of travel article they like and what they want to know about a location. To accomplish this you must carry out as much research as possible on readers and the magazines, newspapers etc. that they read.
- Try to think of your main theme before you write about a location and then work then work your facts and impressions around this!
